What are Enhanced OBD II codes?

Enhanced OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are those codes unique to a vehicle of a specific year, make, model (and possibly engine size). Enhanced DTCs are assigned by the vehicle manufacturers to cover situations not already covered by a Generic DTC. Enhanced DTCs typically begin with 'P1', followed by a 3-digit number (i.e., P1404).

The AutoXray 6000 and 6100 can retrieve both Generic and Enhanced DTCs to the tool. The other AutoXray products are not designed to retrieve these 'P1' codes but some vehicles (notably domestic and Asian) will often send these enhanced codes as well.

If you retrieve a 'P1' code, first check our online listings of Common GM OBD II Enhanced Codes, Common Ford OBD II Enhanced Codes or Common Chrysler OBD II Enhanced Codes. It's likely that your code will be defined on one of these lists.

If the definition of your code is not on either of those lists, you can use our online code lookup application:

Many of the larger public library systems keep a fairly complete inventory of factory service manuals in their reference sections. These manuals will contain code definitions and other troubleshooting information that can be very helpful.
